Bygone Beach Days

This beautiful collection of watercolours was painted by my great grandfather,
Joseph W. Fletcher R.B.A.

Each scene has captured the essence and beauty of the coast of Britain, giving an authentic flavour of life in the early 20th Century and they manage to convey the innocent joy experienced by children at the beach that remains constant throughout the ages.

They are available as greetings cards, magnets, mounted pictures and post cards.

Greetings Cards measure 14.8cm x 20.3cm and have a white border.
They are a printed card mounted on to a greetings card,
come with a matching white envelope and are blank inside for your own message.
Mounted Pictures measure 13.5cm x 9.3cm and the mount measures 8" x 6".
They come sealed in a clear bag.
Post Cards measure 10.5cm x 14.8cm.
Magnets measure 2.5cm in diameter and come as a pack of 8.

Joseph was born in Sheffield in 1878 and was raised by his grandparents. At the age of 18 he qualified as an artist and moved to London to work as a commercial artist designing silverware. Other than a brief period during the First World War, where he served in the Royal Flying Corps as a mechanic, Joseph was able to pursue his career in the arts; he was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, receiving many important commissions, including a piece for Queen Mary’s Doll’s House that is still on display at Windsor Castle.

Joseph enjoyed using a wide variety of creative media such as sculpture, etchings, oil, charcoal and watercolour, but his real passion was fine art. Constantly creative, he loved to use his daughters as subjects for his work. Furthermore, he passed his love of art onto his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His eldest daughter, Joyce, my grandmother studed art and was an active member of the Tumbridge Wells Art Club for many years.  She in turn inspired her eldest daughter, Lorna, my mother, who went on to study art at St Martins School of Art in London. This passing of the love of art from generation to generation continues, and hopefully will for generations to come!

This beautiful collection of Josephs work captures the essence and beauty of the coast of Britain, giving an authentic flavour of life in the early 20th Century. They manage to convey the innocent joy experienced by children at the beach that remains constant throughout the ages.
